Eldeco Navigates Complex Renovation and Expansion at UAB

The construction of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)’s new home for its cutting-edge genomics and data science research was a complex project that combined a full renovation of existing space and new construction of an addition to the facility, encompassing 180,000 square feet and eight stories, including a basement and elevator penthouses on the roof.  Completed over a 2.5-year period from November 2022 to April 2025, this challenging project ultimately delivered a beautiful space for UAB’s specialized academic research – without disrupting the operations of the five surrounding and connected buildings that remained active throughout the construction.

As the electrical contractor for this landmark project, Eldeco was responsible for the demolition of the existing infrastructure and installation of the new, state-of-the-art electrical, data, and fire safety systems.  Because the systems for the surrounding, still-active buildings also ran through the space being renovated and had to be operational at all times during the project, the process had to be carefully planned and meticulously executed to ensure that operations in adjacent buildings were not disrupted.  In fact, any interruption in service to other buildings could have incurred unexpected costs and delayed progress on the project.

From the outset, space constraints presented major challenges.  Overhead construction was affected by especially tight ceiling space. Eldeco’s in-house engineering team used BIM modeling to lay out power distribution equipment, branch conduit systems, telecom pathways, and mineral-insulated (MI) cable routing.  This detailed coordination and modeling helped resolve spatial conflicts in advance and allowed for streamlined installation with minimal rework required.

To further enhance efficiency and maintain quality standards, prefabrication was utilized for pole bases and in-wall assemblies. These components were fabricated off-site to exact dimensions and delivered just-in-time for installation. This approach helped Eldeco navigate the lack of on-site storage and minimized site congestion. Additionally, all power distribution equipment was third-party tested both off-site and again after installation for rigorous quality control and efficient installation.

Despite the complexity and challenges of the project, the Eldeco team demonstrated skill, commitment, and precise execution on this project, and is proud to have contributed to this new campus landmark for UAB.
